Monday, October 21, 3:00-05:00 pm
Kick off the first day of the conference with H2O'Lyon Graduate School’s workshop for young researchers working on aquatic ecosystems. The session will feature:
- Icebreaker
- Game based-workshop: how can we collaborate across disciplines to tackle the challenges facing aquatic ecosystems?
Don’t miss this unique chance to connect, share ideas, and collaborate before the main conference begins!
Open to master and PhD students and post-doctoral fellows working on freshwater ecology and biodiversity who are registered for the conference.

Navigating academia as an early career researcher
Wednesday, October 23, 12:50-1:50 pm
Organised by: Early Career Ecologists group of the SFɲ:- Pierre Quévreux (pierre.quevreux@cri-paris.org)
- Julia Clause (juliamclause@gmail.com)
- Florence Matutini (florence.matutini@ofb.gouv.fr)
- Alain Danet (a.h.danet@sheffield.ac.uk)
Number of attendees: 100
Registration
Workshop Overview:
The workshop aims to create an open and supportive space for early career researchers (ECRs) to engage in open conversations with experienced researchers from diverse institutions. Through small group discussions, participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences, challenges and advice on topics essential to develop a career in Research, within and beyond academia. Key topics include:
- Career planning for ECRs within and outside academia (including teaching and professional development during a PhD)
- Assessing and preventing moral and sexual harassment in academic environments
- Ensuring that ECR voices are heard in lab management and decision-making processes
- Fostering inclusivity of ECRs through social activities (e.g. lunch events, team building, friendly relationships with colleagues…)
- Balancing personal life and academic careers (e.g. health, family, mobility…)
Schedule:
- 10 min: Introduction to the SFE² ECE group and its initiatives for supporting ECRs (workshops, awards, grants…)
- 35 min: Small group discussion (~10 participants per group) with a mix of ECRs and established researchers from different institutions
- 15 min: Plenary session to share and discuss insights gathered from each group
Let’s draw Evolution !
We are convinced that Art can be a major complementary asset to our scientific approaches, both because Art is able to provoke emotions that can help convey our scientific ideas and concepts, and because artists possess a creativity that can be complementary to our scientific works by making it possible to implement new solutions, more sustainable and more respectful of the environment and of human health.During this congress, we invite you to enjoy an experience combining art and science. You will have the opportunity to put yourself in the shoes of an artist and draw how you perceive the sciences of evolution.
This art project is proposed by the SFE² ‘Arts & Sciences’ group and can be carried out at the SFE² stand.

Workshop to introduce resources for an outreach activity on the tree of life
Thursday, October 24, 12:30pm-1:30pm
Room Rhône 1, Centre des congrès de LyonOrganizer: Bastien Boussau
In this workshop, we will be presenting a resource for an outreach activity in classrooms.
The aim of this outreach activity is to introduce the notions of unity and diversity of living organisms, through evolution. We'll show you the material provided as part of the intervention, and all the exercises.
The activity is based on high-quality illustrations created specifically for the presentation to students. It has been tested with 7 to 9 year old pupils, but can probably be used with older children.
Initially, students classify a dozen animals according to the criteria of their choice. The results are then discussed in class. Next, students are asked to think about the genealogy of a family, to reflect on the notions of ancestors and closely or distantly-related cousins. Based on these two elements, the phylogenetic tree of animals is presented. The notion of synapomorphy is introduced, and the relationship between certain animals is discussed. Finally, the complete tree of life is presented and discussed. Each living creature depicted on the tree is given a short description by the students, so that they get to know them better.
The material is available free of charge online, in English and French.
Reaching out about ecology at school as a researcher: what experiences? What avenues?
Wednesday October 23, 12:50pm-1:55pm
Room Rhône 2, Centre des congrès de LyonOrganised by: Nicolas Lieury, Thomas Merrien, Aurélie Coulon, for the LiEns working group of the SFE2.
Workshop Overview:
Many researchers are involved in the transmission and popularization of scientific ecology to schools and extracurricular activities. Sometimes with success, sometimes with difficulty. SFE²'s LiEns working group is attempting to draw lessons from these experiences at the interface, in order to propose solutions for the future. After a brief presentation of the issues and actions of the LiEns group on research-education links, the sharing of experience by a number of speakers will provide an opportunity for discussion on the determinants of effective sharing of scientific ecology in schools.
Schedule:
12:30pm-12:45pm: Nicolas Lieury, Thomas Merrien, Aurélie Coulon : presentation of the working group LiEns and results of its survey on researchers’ involvement in schools
12:45pm-1h30pm: Feedbacks from a few researchers (in brackets: topics they tackled in classes):
- Isabelle Chuine (season observatory Provence)
- Elodie Vercken (insect and habitat diversity)
- Antoine Vernay (DECODER journal)
- Florence Manoury-Danger (diverse)
- Romain Lorrilière (protocole and standardization importance, example with Vigie-Nature Ecole)
- Cédric Gaucherel (diverse)
1h30pm-1h55pm: Open discussion: what works, what does not…
Game: Nature quiz
Until noon on Thursday, October 24
Centre des congrès de LyonOrganizer: Gaspard Dussert
SFE2 Lyon is the perfect opportunity to test your naturalist knowledge and skills!
Using the SpeciesGuessr* application (https://speciesguessr.univ-lyon1.fr)**, we will be offering 6 quizzes on different taxa. You will be given the link to the quizzes for all players on the first day of the conference.
It's very simple to take part: enter your first and last name as your login, answer the quizzes, and the application will count the points for you! It won't take you more than 20 minutes to complete the quizzes.
You can play until noon on Thursday, October 24. Results will be announced at the closing ceremony.
It's your turn to play!
*: SpeciesGuessr, a website for mastering the recognition of animal and plant species, and much more besides! Learn and test your knowledge in a fun way thanks to interactive and customisable quizzes. Unlike other quiz sites, SpeciesGuessr allows you to tailor each quiz to your precise needs: choose a specific taxonomic group (such as birds, reptiles, or flowering plants), a geographical area of interest, the language of your choice and from several levels of difficulty. Connected to iNaturalist's database of 200 million photos, our site offers a unique variety of quizzes, guaranteeing almost infinite playability.
**: The site is already accessible for testing, but is still under development. It should be ready for the start of the conference.
